About Welcome Shadows:
“I submitted this piece to a juried show in my home town shortly after painting It. As part of the process, all of the artists were taken through the exhibition by one of the members of the art panel who were judging the show. When we came to my piece, the jury member said, "now this is a technicall, beautiful, raw and powerful piece, but it's just not the kind of thing you would hang above your couch, Is It?", and promptly moved on.
I died a little bit inside that day.
I've never found much success in my region as an artist; I tell the story that it's because I don't paint wind-swept arbutus and ocean vistas. Viewing my art requires contemplation, self reflection, and sometimes outright discomfort."
